On of the most exciting up-and-coming politicians on the Right, J. D. Vance defied the critics to become the junior Senator for the state of Ohio and has most recently been named as President Donald Trump’s running mate in the 2024 Presidential election.
Vance came from a working class background and joined the Marines, serving in the Iraq war. He credits the Marines with helping him get his life on track. After returning from Iraq he attended Ohio State University before graduating from Yale Law School.
After only a brief period in corporate law, Vance turned his focus to the business and biotechnology sectors. He serves as a principal at Mithril Capital, Peter Thiel’s venture capital firm. And in 2019 he co-founded Narya Capital with backing from Thiel, Eric Schmidt and Marc Andreessen. He has also been an investor in the rapidly growing Youtube competitor Rumble.
His memoir Hillbilly Elegy and the film based on the book brought him considerable attention at a time when America was seeing a sharp rise in populism. His book is often cited as a must-read for those looking to understand middle America and the New York Times called it,” one of the six best books to help understand Trump’s win.”
A non-denominational Christian for much of his life, in 2019 Vance converted to Catholicism.
