J D Vance Books

On of the most exciting up-and-coming politicians on the Right, J. D. Vance is currently an Ohio candidate for the US Senate.

Vance came from a working class background and joined the Marines, serving in the Iraq war. He credits the Marines with helping him get his life on track. After returning from Iraq he attended Ohio State University before graduating from Yale Law School.

After only a brief period in corporate law, Vance turned his focus to the business and biotechnology sectors. He serves as a principal at Mithril Capital, Peter Thiel’s venture capital firm. And in 2019 he co-founded Narya Capital with backing from Thiel, Eric Schmidt and Marc Andreessen. He has also been an investor in the rapidly growing Youtube competitor Rumble.

His memoir Hillbilly Elegy and the film based on the book brought him considerable attention at a time when America was seeing a sharp rise in populism. His book is often cited as a must-read for those looking to understand middle America and the New York Times called it,” one of the six best books to help understand Trump’s win.”

A non-denominational Christian for much of his life, in 2019 Vance converted to Catholicism.

Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis

An introspective look at the foundational yet diminishing culture in America – white working class families.

J. D. Vance takes readers on a journey from his families past to his present, exploring what it’s like to be from “middle America.”

Starting with his families migration from Kentucky’s Appalachia region to Ohio after World War II, his grandparents fight to earn a living and be respectable citizens, escaping poverty, alcoholism and violence. But even for those who do escape, like Vance himself, the scars are left behind.

And for many, the journey isn’t so successful.

Vividly conveyed, Vance details what it’s like to come from nothing and ascend to being a Yale Law School graduate, along with the ghosts that haunt him today.

Hillbilly Elegy was a New York Times Best Seller in 2016 and 2017.
