Known as “America’s Mayor” for his leadership in the aftermath of September 11th, Rudy Giuliani was named the 2001 Time magazine Person of the Year and was even knighted by Queen Elizabeth the II.
Starting his political life as a Democrat, he event volunteered for Robert F. Kennedy’s political campaign in 1968. Switching to an independent, he eventually became a Republican just as President Ronald Regan was being sworn into office.
Born in Brooklyn to Italian immigrants, Giuliani was raised a Catholic. His early career path saw him practicing law and before his mayoralty he had made a name for himself as the prosecutor in the Mafia Commission Trial. He did what was unthinkable at the time, indicting the heads of the five mafia families that ran New York and eventually securing their convictions. To do this he used the relatively new Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) act, laying chargers that included extortion, racketeering and murder for hire.
Giuliani’s success and his tough-on-crime attitude brought him the notoriety necessary to run for mayor. His first attempt in 1989 was unsuccessful, but he later won in 1993 and 1997. During that time he enacted a policy of though enforcement of even minor misdemeanours. These actions brought about a very long line of critics, although it’s impossible to deny that during his run as mayor, New York City became much, much safer.
An early supporter of President Donald Trump in is 2016 election bid, Giuliani joined his personal legal team in 2018 to defend against the onslaught of never ending accusations. After the 2020 election, he led Trump’s legal team in raising questions about voter fraud and challenging the validity of the results.
