A self-proclaimed constitutional Conservative, Rand Paul might also be considered a Libertarian were it not for his strong religious beliefs.
Born Randal Howard Paul, he is the junior United State Senator from Kentucky, a post he has held since 2011. A physician by trade, he’s the son of twelve-term Senator ad three-time presidential candidate Ron Paul.
Rand Paul’s politics include a non-interventionalist approach to foreign policy, a pro Second Amendment stance, and skepticism of global warming (or at least in the notion that it’s man-made and our ability to affect change on the environment). He generally opposes US military action abroad and supported the withdrawal of the US from the Paris Climate Agreement. He’s staunchly pro-life and takes a hard-line against government spending no matter the reason. For example, he took a lot of heat for opposing a bill that would extend the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund. While that seems like an easy bill to get on board with, Paul opposed it simply by requesting to add an amendment that would require spending cuts in other areas to offset those costs. He was vilified in the media, although it’s clear to see his intentions are sound.
Paul is a true individualist and is often the only dissenting voice in government. He endorsed Donald Trump for president and openly opposed Joe Biden’s questionable legitimacy as President. He is arguably one of Trump’s biggest proponents, and yet according to FiveThirtyEight he’s also the Republican who voted with President Trump’s positions just 74 percent of the time – the least of any Republican.
Paul is an avid critic of big government and a serious opponent of socialism, arguing quite clearly that it’s basic premise of redistribution requires a excess government control and a “equality police.” Simply put, socialism is tyranny, a point he argues for in his 2019 work, “The Case Against Socialism.”
In promoting the book he often relied on a famous George Orwell quote, “If you want a vision of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face – forever.”
His first book, “The Tea Party Goes to Washington,” outlines Paul’s involvement in the Tea Party movement that emerged out of the Great Recession, his strong belief in limited government and how the ever-expanding role of the government in our lives is contrary to the principles of the constitution.

His extreme take on limited government would definitely make Rand Paul a Libertarian, at least from an economic standpoint. However, his views on social issues like abortion align him with the Christian Conservatives.

Rand Paul is an Ophthalmologist, having graduated from the Duke University School of Medicine in 1988 and competing his residency in 1993. He practiced medicine, specializing in cataract and glaucoma surgeries, LASIK and corneal transplants for roughly 15 year before entering politics.
