Author of almost 100 books, Peter Kreeft is a professor of philosophy at Boston College. A convert Roman Catholicism, his books focus on philosophy, Christianity and Catholicism, with many seeking to distil complex ideas and arguments down into easy-to-understand ideas that can be accessible to a far wider audience. And applied practically to the modern world.

His prolific writing might best be explained by a story out of St. Augustine’s writings, in which a little boy was emptying the ocean onto the sand using a thimble. In this vision, an angel told St. Augustine that the boy would have completed this task before he had written everything there is to say about God.

His conversion to Catholicism came via his own investigation of the faith for a research paper in university. He also sites an argument posed by C S Lewis that, “the Catholic Church’s claim to be the one true Church, the Church Christ founded, forces us to say either that this is the most arrogant, blasphemous and wicked claim imaginable, if it is not true, or else that she is just what she claims to be.”

How to Destroy Western Civilization and Other Ideas from the Cultural Abyss

Despite it’s title, Peter Kreeft’s latest book isn’t about how to destroy Western civilization, but how to save it.

In a series of essays, he outlines how old ideas that have worked in the past can work again now. He argues that the wisdom that can save our civilization can be gathered as data and used to solve relevant problems. Fundamental amongst all of this is the need to have children, both from a practical standpoint, that without future generations we don’t have a future civilization, and from a more philosophical standpoint, that having children is the most unselfish thing we can do. And giving of oneself is the start of civilization.

Handbook of Christian Apologetics: Hundreds of Answers to Crucial Questions

Need answers to the big BIG questions? Scholar Peter Kreeft has them.

In this powerful book, he tackles and answers the questions of the existence of God, creation vs evolution, free will, miracles, the problem of evil, the resurrection, the existence of heaven and hell, objective truth and the historical accuracy of the Bible. And perhaps most fundamentally, the connection between faith and reason, and how we’re able to know any of this.

If you have questions, BIG questions, Peter Kreeft has the answers.

Christianity for Modern Pagans: Pascal’s Pensées: PASCAL’s Pensees Edited, Outlined, and Explained

Defenders of the Christian faith are rare in modern society. Peter Kreeft is one such apologist.

With numerous writings on the works of ancient and medieval theologians and philosophers, this book takes the perspective of the first post-medieval apologist as a way to speak to a post-medieval world.

Using Blaise Pascal’s Pensées, Kreeft shows how modern secular problems can be solved with Christianity.

Summa of The Summa: The Essential Philosophical Passages of St. Thomas Aquinas’ Summa Theologica

Saint Thomas Aquinas wrote the book on the Catholic Church. Literally.

His work the Summa Theologica explains in detail the philosophical concepts of the Church, but in a practical way.

In that vein, Peter Kreeft tackles the Summa with his own explanation of what it means and how it applies to your life.

Practical Theology: Spiritual Direction from St. Thomas Aquinas

One of the greatest spiritual thinkers of all time, St. Thomas Aquinas has a lot to say to help you achieve happiness and, ultimately, heaven.

In “Practical Theology” Peter Kreeft uses 359 of Aquinas’ most poignant nuggets of truth and applies them in a practical way to the modern world. In doing so he creates a reference book for solving the big questions and life’s big issues, while helping anyone in their quest to achieve the ultimate goal: unity with God.

Forty Reasons I Am a Catholic

Sometimes a title really does say it all. In this logically argued book, Peter Kreeft admits that there are far more than forty reasons to be a Catholic, but lays out his 40 most compelling.

As he says, “A good question deserves a good answer.” And these are his.

The Philosophy of Tolkien: The Worldview Behind The Lord of the Rings

Even a novice reader can see there are connections between Tolkien’s epic masterpiece The Lord of The Rings and Christianity. But how deep the connection goes is truly impressive.

Peter Kreeft delves into the fantastic world of Middle Earth to unpack the over 50 philosophical themes and 1000 references to the Bible.

In fact, The Lord of the Rings is so rich in philosophy, he argues it can become the basis for an introduction to philosohpy.

You Can Understand The Bible: A Practical Guide to Each Book in the Bible

Everyone knows of it, but no one actually reads it. No book is more daunting than the Bible.

But it doesn’t have to be.

Renowned scholar Peter Kreeft will take you through each book of the Bible and shed light on the meaning and rules for life built into each. And he does so with a light-hearted approach and with humor, making each book of the Bible understandable, entertaining and important to your own life.
