Libertarian and entrepreneur, Patrick Byrne actively uses his wealth and success to fund projects and politicians he supports.
He is the son of John J Byrne, the former chairman of Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway-owned GEICO insurance company. Byrne senior and Buffett were also friends.
Byrne junior is best known for his tenure as CEO of Overstock.com (known as D2 Discounts Direct at the time), which he bought a 60 percent equity stake in at the start of 1999 and by the end of the year had appointed himself as CEO. Much of that time has been marked by his battle with short sellers, which he alleges are part of a larger conspiracy to undermine his business.
Named National Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst & Young, Byrne eventually stepped down from his position at Overstock.com.
His experience there led him to believe that an American oligarchy made up of Wall Street and the Deep State are running and ruining America.
Politically, Byrne has been a major financier of politicians (generally Republican) and causes in his home state of Utah.
He’s also a vocal supporter of private schooling and sits as co-Chair of EdChoice, a non-profit organization founded by Milton Friedman and his wife. The organization supports school vouchers that would allow individuals to refocus their public school tax dollars towards a private education, with the remainder of the funding coming other sources.
Byrne became a vocal supporter of President Donald Trump in the final days of his presidency, when he saw that the election had been stolen. He wrote a book, “The Deep Rig,” about it and even went so far as consulting with the President on how to handle proving the election results were rigged.
Putting his money where his mouth is, he even set up and funded audits, such as the one in Arizona’s Maricopa County.
The Deep Rig: How Election Fraud Cost Donald J. Trump the White House, By a Man Who did not Vote for Him
Patrick Byrne was never a supporter of President Donald Trump. That is, until he was red pilled after watching the obvious fraud that marked the 2020 election.
Rather than passively let it all unfold, Byrne did what he always does, and flew into action. He gathered a team of “cyber-ninjas” to clearly unfurl the data story behind how the election results couldn’t possibly be legitimate. At the same time, he set up and funded organizations to battle on the political and legal side, in order to avoid the “The Deep Rig.”
Byrne’s book tells the amazing story, set against the backdrop of his decades-long career working with the Washington, DC.
He outlines, convincingly, that the fraud was real and, as a result, that the American republic is in grave jeopardy.
