If at first you don’t succeed is most certainly the motto and the story of Nigel Farage. A man who lost and lost again, he finally won and won big, shattering the European Union. Feeling betrayed by the Conservative party under John Major with the signing of the pro-EU Treaty on European Union at Maastricht, he left the Conservatives and joined the UK Independence Party (UKIP). Farage gave voice to the average citizens of England, forcing a national referendum which declared that the majority of citizens did not want to be a part of the European experiment any more.
But the referendum wasn’t the end of it with British politicians and the ruling elites doing everything in their power to stall, wait out or wear down the will of the people. Two years after the referendum and with no end in sight, Farage created the Brexit Party which rose to the majority for England in the European Parliament and finally brought to and end his country’s involvement in the European Union.
Farage’s first book “Flying Free” published in 2011 details his political life up until that point and showcases how one person really can make a difference.
His 2015 book “Purple Revolution” highlights the rise of UKIP from a non-entity in British parliament to a force that would change the country forever.
Farage is also credited as a co-author in the 2016 book “The Global Refugee Crisis” which is a transcript of the semi-annual Munk Debate with he and Mark Steyn arguing against unchecked immigration while UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour and leading historian Simon Schama take the open borders approach.
Farage’s politics might most easily be referred to as Populist.
He’s also a shockingly good orator, and his final speech at the European Parliament is must-watch material.
