Anyone who is economically right of center absolutely needs to read Milton Friedman’s “Capitalism and Freedom.” In fact, anyone who is remotely interested in economics should.
An American economist, Friedman was part of the Chicago school of economics that rejected Keynesian economic theory that had created a role for government to play in impacting market forces. In fact, Friedman believed that had Keynes lived to see the way in which his theories had been exploited to balloon government intervention he would have recanted. Friedman believed in a more limited approach to government’s involvement in the market and was an advisor to both President Ronald Regan and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. His theories played a major role in turning back the involvement of government in the marketplace.
In 1976 Friedman was awarded the Nobel Prize for Economics.
“Capitalism and Freedom” holds a prestigious position on TIME magazine’s list of All-TIME 100 Best Nonfiction Books. It’s also ranked on our list of the Best Conservative Books of all time.
His economic theories continue to be highly regarded and espoused by such prominent economists as Thomas Sowell.
Far more than just a thinker or professor, Friedman’s ideas shaped the very world we live in today. To give a sense of the impact his works have had, just look to former Federal Reserve Board chairman Alan Greenspan who said, “There are very few people over the generations who have ideas that are sufficiently original to materially alter the direction of civilization. Milton is one of those very few people.”
