A lawyer by trade, Gaetz served in the Florida House of Representatives from 2010 until 2016 and made a name for himself defending the “stand-your-ground law” during the Trayvon Martin killing in 2012. He then pursuing a career in Federal politics and after winning the seat to be the U.S. representative for Florida’s 1st congressional district, he has been re-elected in both 2018 and 2020.

Son of well-known Florida politician Don Gaetz, Matt Gaetz lives in Fort Walton Beach, Florida and attends the First Baptists Church there.
